The Meaning of Whole PI

The ratio of the circumference to the diameter is one of the oldest ways of referring to a circle. The ratio of the circumference to the diameter has been used since antiquity, such as in the Old Testament, 1 Kings 7:23 and 2 Chronicles 4:2, as mentioned by Posamentier and Lehmann in their book p - A Biography of the World’s Most Mysterious Number. Similarly, Beckman mentions that the Egyptians and Babylonians knew the ratio and the value for p as long as 2,000 years ago. But the current symbol for p started being used only much more recently. Posamentier and Lehmann cite a date of 1652 is the first use of the symbol p in the form of p/d used to represent the ratio of the periphery of the circle to its diameter. In 1706 William Jones (1675-1749) used p to represent the ratio of the circumference to the diameter. This seems to be the first time it was used with the same meaning that we have today.

According to Posamentier and Lehmann11, it was use of this symbol by the famous mathematician Leonard Euler (1707-1783) in his famous book Introduction in Analysin Infinitorum that led to its widespread use.
